Any of you smokers out there have any ideas on buying pellets in CA? Internet research so far hasn't yielded any worthwhile results. The shipping is as much as the pellets from the midwest or east.

I don't want to start grindin' up trees to try and make my own pellets!

My smoker arrived yesterday and was out of the box and seasoned immediately. She's a beautiful piece of work.

Help,

Mike

Whew! I just went to that bbqrsdelight.com. Unless I completely mis-read it, it's $4.99 per 1 pound of pellets. Get out the slide rule...carry the one...carry another one...oh my...if my bad math is correct, that's $200 for the same 40 pounds I paid $20 for from CS. What gives there? Are those magic pellets?

Kidding aside that does seem awfully expensive, eh?
Ahh, I knew something must have been amiss with that pricing. I should have read the details. Thanks Tom.

Hey Fast Freddie, thanks for the reply. Is that $21 per bag shipping or total. $21 would be a great price for total from what I've seen so far. Isleton eh? That's not too far from me in Brentwood if I have my geography correct. How do you like your smoker. I just got mine and ribs are going on today. Yummy!

For all who read this. I've seen the posts on the great customer service from CS and it appears as though they were all correct. My smoker arrived not in the originally packed condition. The shipper must have really bounced it around because the side racks had detached and all racking collapsed to the bottom of the unit. With a couple of pics and a phone call CS immediately sent out replacements to get me up and running. Kudos to them in a world where customers are only pals until the check clears!

Mike. I pay $21.00 for 40lbs of hickory delivered, but I have to buy at least 400 pounds to get a break on the shipping. That is OK. They don't go bad. Even during the winter when we get all the rain. I never empty my hopper and I have never had any problems with the pellets. I tried Traegers, but they have a funny smell. I threw them away. I got FE at the Mandalay Bay contest in 2003. You will have to work very hard to mess up cooking with the FE. Mine is going all the time. I do some catering on the side, and sell bbq to whoever wants some. It bakes real good too. Try some hickory smoked cherry pie. It's killer.

Thanks FF. I'll give Eddy a try. I wouldn't prefer to buy 400 pounds at once, but I certainly would to get that price. We could split an order if you don't like to purchase that much at one time. It sounds like you go through them pretty quick though.

I assumed I'd be getting Traeger pellets if it's from Eddy though. Does he sell something different than CS?

You're right so far about the FE. We just cooked our first item(bb ribs) and they came out beautifully. Had some people over for the first ever smoke with the FE and there was no conversation at all at the table. Just mmm's and ahhh's, and maybe an occasional "get me another beer". My unit is going to get a good amount of use even without catering.

Next stop...brisket!

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the late reply but works been killing me over the last few months. I bring in a couple 400lbs purchases from Eddy a couple times a year. If you make it out to the Palm Springs area let me know and I'll be happy to help you out. I have found a few Fireplace shops that carry Traeger pellets in stock for emergencies so you might give that a try. Ed's service has been great though and that's where the best value and quality will be found.

Unfortunately the lights will be out and the smoker will be resting.

Oddly enough, I'll be at the birthplace of the FEC100, Kansas City. Hmmm how many bbq places can I hit in seven days? If they serve breakfast...I wonder...smoked biscuits and gravy???

Any other time though, stop on in and bring a bib. It can get a little messy around here when bbq is happening.

Mike
