I'll jump in here and try to answer this one. No pellets no heat period. The higher the temperature you cook at the less smoke you will get. You can cook chicken at 175 degrees for several hours and you will have some pretty smokey chicken or you can cook it at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes and have very little smoke taste to it. But if aren't burning any pellets you will not get any heat period. It is your sole source of heat. Hope this helps.
