Thanks, Gary. I'd seen this, and noted temps in the 620 to 630 range for Zone 1, but I'd heard of temps in excess of 700 degrees. I was wondering what IR-measured *maximum* temp folks had seen at the Zone 1 grate, with searing/grilling in mind.
My IR only goes to 600° so I can't speak for Zone 1. I found where I had measured 707° in zone 3 and if memory serves I was over 800° in zone 2 but I can't find that info real quick.
Originally posted by DWS: Thanks, all. Would it be safe to say that Zone 1 grate temps can be made to exceed 800 degrees, in the interest of a good sear?
It would be safe to say, they can be made to exceed 900*.
I believe the controller is the same, so the short answer should be yes. The exception might be if it is really cold out since the 500 lacks insulation.
