At the request of Smokin’ here’s a quick run down on my “long distance remote monitor” using the iPhone or iPad. For use of an android phone see post by Bigpapam109.

Apologies in advance if I make this too simplistic or hard to follow!

Needed –
Laptop or Desktop computer – with internet connection
Webcam with included software
Remote Temp Monitor – I’m using the Maverick ET-732 or ET-73
iPhone or iPad with either Log-Me-In Ignition, or Jump Desktop app installed ($19.99-29.99)
(There may be other remote desktop apps out there, but I’ve used these two)
Computer will need the desktop app (free) from Log-me-in Ignition, or Jump Desktop installed (available from their respective websites for free)

1)Install webcam and supplied software

2)Install app on iPhone or iPad (Log-me-in Ignition or Jump Desktop)
3)Download and install application on the computer
4)Plug in the webcam to the computer and start any application that will show a live view from the webcam. Most webcams have a native app that does this. I use a Microsoft Life Cam, but any will do.

5)Setup your remote thermometer so it can be seen by the webcam and on the screen of the computer (sometimes lighting and glare can be an issue… one time my wife turned off the lights in the kitchen in the middle of a cook… I couldn’t see the readout!)

6)Once the readout is visible on the computer screen launch the iPhone/iPad app and log in to your computer.

7)A replica of your computer’s screen should show up on the iPhone/iPad. You can zoom in, or out and manipulate the screen as needed. Nice thing is you are now “Controlling” the computer at home, so if for some reason the software wigs out, in a few clicks on your iPhone or iPad you can just restart the application on your home computer.

8)This will work great over wifi or 3G, Reportedly it works on Edge too but I haven’t tested it.
9) REMEMBER – when using this from your iPhone/iPad LOG OUT – if you don’t the remote desktop application will keep running in the background sucking battery life, and MB in data…
