Yesterday when testing my Tripp-Lite 1250 setup I started thinking about a back up system.

For my photography I use a Vegabond Mini Lithium to power my 500watt studio strobes and they are amazing.

For the heck of it I tried one on my FEC100 and it ran it fine for the last few hours of the cook. I need to see if it will work the igniter also but if so these may be a great option for the $$

For those electrical engineers, if this is a bad idea please let me know before I ruin something. They are sine wave so thinking its safe for the FEC100 anyways.

Backup to the Tripp Lite? If you're running batteries, why another backup?

For how long a cook?

As far as the ignitor. If the smoker is already running and it's a true backup, you'll be fine. The problem would be if you lose power and restart, it will kick the ignitor in. If you already have a fire, save the power drain and pull the plug on the ignitor.

What about batteries? They work like a champ. I've had mine for 6 years, no problems. The tripp lite recharges them whenever you plug into commercial power.
I suppose those could be a backup if needed, I don't see why not... I doubt you'll need that though.... I'd probably spend the money on another inverter you could hook to you batteries as a backup before I'd buy those... BUT if you already have those... why not?

Specs say 8.8AH.... after starting the FEC will pull 0.25--0.5 amps... so you should be able to run several hours on tthe vegabond.

As far as starting... I'd get some fire gel or even hand sanitizer gel... you can use either to re-start or start a fire... then the ignitor isn't an issue. (but you need to unplug the ignitor wire)

Thanks guys

I already have 2 of the vegabond units I use for photography. They are really small so I will just leave them in the truck when BBQ events roll around for just in case.

I will post pics later of my setup, I just built the box to go on front of my trailer to hold the batteries, jack stands and other misc items.

I'd ask our electricians about capacity and holding power.

For $169 plus shipping, you'd be better off with a simple Deep Cell Battery and an Inverter.

Don't know that, but I do know batteries. After a "period" of use, you'll end up having to replace it.
