Ok, here's a question. This morning I loaded up my #50 with 30 pounds of Butt which was sitting at 35 degrees. The weather here is cool at 55 degrees.(I don't know if any of this matters.) I put in 6 oz. hickory and shut the door. Minutes later I remember that I forgot something opened the door, cleared the smoke and reshut it. Minutes after that I noticed the smoker puffing like a steam engine with smoke shooting straight up and out the sides of the door. It would puff, stop for 2 seconds and puff again. This went on for a couple minutes then resumed normal duty. In between puffs there was no smoke whats so ever so I'm thinking it was sucking air in at that time.
Which leads me to wonder, if smoke (hot air and unspend particles) are coming out the top, there must be a fresh air source or the cooker would implode! Does fresh air also come in the top or is it through leaky doors??? What's say.

I would think it comes in the drip hole at the bottom and goes out the top vent and also any leaks at the upper edges of the door.

Did you remember to poke a hole in the bottom foil?

As an aside: The smoker wouldn't necessarily implode. If you've ever tried the good old chemistry set experiment for making charcoal in a covered tin can with a tiny hole in the top, you'll recall that you can make plenty of smoke without adding any air.
