G'day from Australia. I'm a newie to this forum and have been keen to learn more about BBQ/smoking, although I have been doing my version of it for years, my introduction was in Bermuda in the early sixties, spare ribs marinated in Coke with spices, good stuff. I was a butcher working in Hamilton and could'nt get over how many ribs we sold each week.I would like to ask if anyone could advise about Queing programs taped from TV, we don't get any here in OZ! has anyone or could anyone help me in this regard? naturally I would pay all costs involved cheers to all butcherboy AKA Tom.

G'Day.

The problem is to you have access to NTSC TV and player? Don't know if it's still as big an issue as it was, but most places overseas have a different format.

Truthfully most of the shows on TV, while they are good entertainment, they don't really help you with real Q. Just watch one of those shows that wants you to BOIL your ribs. Yuck.

There are a few videos out there, and while good, I think get kinda expensive, especially when you're paying $29.95 US for just one topic.

Not sure what you're wanting to learn from DVDs/Tape, but personally I think we can teach you all you need right here.

But we can help with the video's if you still want.
CS are available in OZ.

A filing cabinet smoker will have a lot of issues, such as paint and other cleaners inside. It also won't hold much heat, so at best you'd probably only be able to cold smoke. If you put too big of a heat element in it, then the metal won't stand up to the heat.

Years ago, refrigerators where the choice, not filing cabinets, but they're made out of plastic inside --- and plastic doesn't do well in smokers Big Grin
Yes I realize that CS's are available here in OZ they are very expensive though and as I am on a pension I just can't afford one, the filing cab I have is very old and heavy in steel thus I though it may be ok to convert to a smoker and I do plan to cold smoke to a degree. butcherboy.
butcherboy, Just wondering...how much does it cost to send a Cookshack to Australia? Or a FE?
If your filing cabinet is very old, it might be even scarier to use as a smoker because of the age. Maybe lead paint or scarier heavy metals involved. I think you probably have access to lots of smokers that are safer to use and I'm sure a lot of them are cheaper than the medical bills involved after using an old filing cabinet.
If you give or sell your bbq to someone, are you liable for any harm you might inflict because of using an old cabinet? I'm not finding fault with you because you're very inventive, just please think about what you've said.

2greyhounds,G'day the cost of shippimg a CS to OZ would be astronomical, I really envy the choice and availability, and price, that can be found in the US, I make my own sausage (retired butcher)and I found the cost of fillers and grinders so much cheaper than I can buy locally, same goes for cookers/smokers, at present I use a modified weber kettle. Don't think there will be a problem with paint re filing cabinet, cheers Tom
