I have a co0worker who builds furniture and such, and was wondering if his scrap oak would be good for smoking, or if it is too dry etc. It is very clean, and not stained or varnished.
That sounds like a great source for good clean wood. I would be very gun shy of scrap wood that you are not familiar with.. for instance oak pallets. You don't know if they were impregnated with something or if something dangerous spilled and was absorbed in that wood.
If you are using a CS.. you will use so little wood that a $4 bag from Wal-Mart will last you for months.
I plan on using scrap hardwood flooring, oak, maple, hickory etc, that are left over after installation of new hardwood floors, For the amount a wood that a CS uses, if you want that type of smoke, it would be an unlimited supply in exchange for a rack of ribs every now and then.
My Wal-Mart has Mesquite, hickory and apple. I tried mesquite (once) and am sticking to hickory, apple, alder, and will be using some of the plethora of oak in my yard.
