Anyone come up with a good idea on how to secure the hopper lid when transporting? Latch and hinge?

Yes what we do is take a bunge cord and go through the handle on top and around both ends.

Same here, bunge cord.
same, but with a tie down,,, would be nice to have it secure for traveling,, ie higher d rings or some such design improvement
Like Craig said, I would always transport my FEC laying on its back in a small trailer over to Craig's house before it would go into his bigger trailer and I would just use a longer bunge cord. Never had it come off or loose.

Actually still have my original FE, straight auger and use the bunge on that one.

On the older FEC's, the lid fits too tight to use this latch and hinges. But you could put a latch on each side to hold the lid.

To to your tractor supply store or Lowe's and purchase holding pin. It will slide right thru the hole and clip on the other end of the pin. It works great.
