smokin holiday blues

Had plans today to smoke some holiday Ribs / Brisket for friends / family. Follwed the BRITU ribs recipe, put the ribs in the smoker and set my SM08 to 225 degrees. Checked on them a couple of hours later and there was no smoke. Opened the door and there was no heat. At this point, either the smoker has a problem or the exterior wall outlet. I then goto the break box and flip all my switches for good measure. No joy. Plug a hair dryer into that same outlet as the smoker. No joy. I hope to have an electrician look at / fix the outlet on Friday. No Q for this Christmas Frowner How long can I stored rubbed ribs in the fridge before they start to go south?

That outlet pair is my only exterior wall plug on the back patio (neither outlet works). This is the first time I have had any problems with it (wouldn't you just know that it would conk out for Christmas). I may just try to freeze the rubbed ribs and thaw them after I get the electric problem resolved. Any advice I should give the electrician? This outlet is only used for my CS SM08.

You may have a GFCI outlet somewhere else on the exterior of your house (or possibly even in your garage) that is providing protection for your patio outlet. Look for an outlet that has a "Test" and "Reset" button in the middle of it. Press the reset button, and see if that solves your problem. These things usually trip for a reason, but I have had mine trip a couple of times for no readily apparent cause. Good luck!

100% agree with this. If this is the cause but the outlet still won't stay on you will have more info for the electrician as well.


I certainly appreciate it when folks give me as much info as possible when I arrive to fix their electrical woes. Smiler

I feel like a schmuck. The electrician came out and discovered the outside outlet was on the same GFI circuit as the outlet in my master bathroom (the bathroom isn't exactly in the same locale as the back patio so I never suspected this). He reset the GFI in the master bath and all was good. Now I get to find out if my spare ribs are still good or have turned into HAM.
