I smoked a butt the other night and it turned out fantastic as usual. This was my first time using the Smokette in cold weather. The low for that night was about 10 Fahrenheit. The temp outside didn't effect the cooking process at all Big Grin . But I did see a potential problem.

When I went to clean up, I pulled the drip pan from under the Smokette and noticed that the drippings had formed a little "stalactite" that darn near plugged the drip hole. Has anyone ever had this problem? What would happen if the hole did get clogged? Is there anyway to avoid this issue or is this nothing to be concerned about?

I forget which is the stalagtite and which is the stalagmite!!! I assume the drippings in the pan were cold and building their way UP, rather than the reverse. if so, then raise the smoker on some bricks or blocks so there is a greater distance to the pan... will take longer to rise up and block the hole.
And I thought people from Maine had more sense...? Kidding of course.

Being originally from Michigan, I know what "cold" is. Spent 28 years there. Here in Arkansas, where the average Jan and Feb temp is 45, 10 is just a might on the cool side. People here freak when the temp nears 32. Worse yet is that they "try" to drive in the snow.

Being an old Michigander, snow is no problem but these true Arkies are absolutely nuts when it comes to driving on the wet stuff (no offense to DLH or any other Arkansan).

Arkansas is a beautiful state. And, we are so glad that Clinton got elected. Why you ask...? He now lives in New York and our women are safe again! Big Grin
Smiler Well I have been in Arkansas 41 years and have no problem driving in snow. You are right however, some people have no clue. The problem here is, we get alot of ice. I don't care who you are, driving on ice is almost impossible and should not be attempted. Yankees, please don't even tell me about chains and studs, I know. Here we have 3 kinds of yankees. Wheelz, I am sure you have heard this. Yankees stay put. Damn yankees come down here, nose around, go back home. G-damn yankees stay. Smiler
The unit is just great in the cold.
I'm up here in the really cold Northeast.
I smoked some great ribs at (with a wind chill) minus 20 degrees last weekend.
The unit is really well insulated. I just kept moving the drip pan around to move the stalagmite away from the hole. Cleaning the pan was easy - the drippings froze and idn't even stick to the pan - came right up. Big Grin
