We seldom would consider eating twice at the same restaurant on the same trip because we'd prefer that lingering memories remain for the next trip. Revisiting too soon tends to expose the flaws, especially if the meal is repeated.
We needed to break this rule of ours because we didn't get all of the rib info on the first visit and preferred to smooze the manager again in person, rather than by phone. Thus a 2nd visit to Isaac Hayes (Famous Dave's) was in order.
The meal we ordered was identical to the first night except we elected to not overstuff and passed on that wonderful bread pudding.
About the ribs... Famous Dave's has an interesting way of selling their rib plates and platters. Instead of portioning by slab, half slab, etc., they portion by number of bones....5 bones for a Regular Order, 8 bones for a Large Order, and 12 bones for an Extra Large Order.
I can make the Olympic eating team, yet 8 ribs with the four sides they serve, are much more than enough food for me, perhaps because these were not true STL cut ribs. The chine bone was gone, but the tips were there. Don't know what this style is, but I would prefer it to STL cut, were I able to find it here. A Q chain here, Bandana's, has their ribs cut the same way. Anyone know what this cut is called?
The idea of 5-8-12 is smart marketing for any number of reasons. Among the most important is that they can come from more than one slab of ribs, if necessary.
The ribs were about as good the 2nd visit. I say "about" because it's difficult to add back in the surprise and the expectations the 2nd time around in a three night period. Actually, they were still beyond excellent.
What not to like about Isaac Hayes (Famous Dave's)? Personal taste... the music sucked. I love blues. Muddy invented electricity in my book in the early 50s in Chicago. I don't go to Chicago to listen to 60s and 70s R&B from Detroit (Motown). That is what was on the juke. That is what was presented as live entertainment. It was good. It just wasn't to my liking. If you wanna give me soul at a Q joint, then by gosh, give me Otis.
If you live within a two hour drive of a Famous Dave's I'd recommend the visit. Buy his book, too. It's beautiful and some of the recipes are out of sight.
