wondering if anyone has had any experience with this brand.I am looking for a new one to replace my maverick ET-73,that I keep having trouble with going blank all the time.the receiver is no more than 20 feet from the smoker at all times,& I don't know of anything that could be interfering.I checked the batteries with a tester & they are all good.when I use it, I sit it in a window in the line of sight of the transmitter at night when I go to bed.I almost burnt up a couple of briskets the other night because of it.I am not happy with it & it is now getting replaced.this is the link for the other one.http://www.brookstone.com/shop/product.asp?product_code=330654&world_code=3&category_code=33&subcategory_code=465&search_type=subcategory&cm_ven=Partner&cm_cat=MSN&cm_pla=Search&cm_ite=Datafeed just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this brand.it says it will receive up to 300 feet.sounds good if it works.

I have that model. Range has never been a problem. The pre-set temps. limits its usability. The probes also get fried at times when used on a high temp grill.

I'm still looking for a high quality unit with thermocouple technology that would last when used on a regular/infra-red grill. For a smoker this is fine but you can't set it for abive ~170 degrees.

I've been using the Maverick ET-7 with two probes. Haven't had a problem with range but I could run some tests if you want. (have a couple of them) and they seem to be ok. If you don't need a remote, the Taylor's are pretty good and they also have a remote. But try to get one that has more than a year of warranty so you can get it replaced if the probes go out.

I too have an ET-7 Maverick and as far as I'm concerned it's not worth the powder to blow it to hell. It's constantly loosing it's signal and I have to run outside to reset it. It loses it's signal even when It's outside no more than 15 feet away from the transmitter. Also, sometimes it takes 6 to 8 tries to get it to re register. The unit is not a convenience it's a hassle. Don't waste your money on the Maverick.

my comments exactly.TaktEZ,thats the same problem that I have had with my ET-73.I have been dissatisfied with this unit,since day 1 because of this exact problem.I am leaning toward getting the taylor 1474,or the Acu-Rite 00869.anyone have any comments about these 2,please jump in.I am wanting one with the remote like these.

I just ran a test with a Taylor 1474. I have one but haven't used it yet.

First, I set the xmitter at one end of my house, went to the other end (about 60') and turned on the recvr. It connected right away which says you don't need the trick of syncing the two like you do a Maverick.

Then I went outside (xmitter still inside) and started walking up my road. (about 200 ft) and it still had a reading but I felt it was just giving me the last reading so I turned the recvr off. Sure enough, when I turned it back on I didn't have a reading. Walked back towards the house and between 150 and 200 feet it picked up the reading again.

I'm impressed! and for $15 at Amazon you can't beat the price. (1 yr warranty)

Geesh guys..........CookShack has already made BBQing a "set it and forget it" thing. Do we really find it essential to be entirely lazy?

I mean...aren't we, as men, supposed to get up at 4:00AM, go outside in our boxers, and make Tim the Tool Man noises while we check the temp. of our que? Big Grin

I'm using the taylor also. $14.99 ($20.13 with shipping)
Range is fine for me.
Programmed settings available are 140, 145, 160, 170 & 175.
In the "PGM" Mode, you can set anything you want from 32 to 392.
I haven't checked it for accuracy, but I have never had a thermometer that was off too much.

One minor glitch is that it has no memory. When you shut the power off at the transmitter; it resets to "Beef well done (170)." The "PGM" mode also resets to 170.

A good habit is to leave your remote in the "Alert mode". That way if you set it down after that extra beer, or other distracting events; just turn off the transmitter & find the tone scource. Don't forget that you now have to redo the settings on the transmitter.

i am with you on this one. my maverick burnt up in my infamous fec100 fire and turned out to be a blessing. got the cheap taylor no transmitter, sit and watch the thing, remote thermos at target. started with one. last count i had 7 at 14 bucks each. with that many heat mapping is no problem. synching 2 sm150's with the fec is no problem. multiple custom meat orders out of the 150 ( tomorrow night's emergency order is pork but slicable temp and turkey halves and a brisket so it looks like another 48 hour day) nope no problem just a probe in each.
as far as the boxers go-- lil to much info there Eeker much too humid here for those things.
as far as the set and forget goes come on down (like the old florida vacation ad used to say) and watch me play the buttons on the 150's like an organ Big Grin

Yes, just press the meat button until you see a display of "PGM". Then push the min+ or sec- until you reach the temperature setting you desire.

naw here's the way it works. learned both of these thoughts from chef achatz so read them with a thick german accent.

only reason i got 7 is i didn'y know you could order replacement probes on something that cheap so i just bought more.
peg found out she could get them.
gonna take a long time to live that one down Razzer
