Turkey directly on Rack or Pan? and Preheat?

Tried my first turkey this past weekend with okay results. And great feedback on the open forum; but have two questions:
1. I put the turkey directly on rack closest to burner, not in pan. Is this correct?
2. I put the turkey in and then set temp to 275. Should I have waited for temp to hit 275 before putting turkey in?

1. Directly on the rack is fine. The pan method will owrk as well but may limit smoke absorbtion.

2. Either way is fine. Adding the turkey (or anything else) to a hot smoker cuts down time but only marginally.
