I have just purchased a CS. Up to now I've always cooked on a "flat" BBQ. Now I can no longer get around so easily but I don't want to quit doing BBQ. My question is this: Can I put my CS in my garage (makes it easier for me to use) and vent the smoke outside using a set-up like is used for clothes dryers? Thanks! I'll appreciate your help to this old novice. Smiler

Do a search on vent, and you'll find a lot of interesting solutions.

Bascially, no you can not. There needs to be some airspace above the vent to help the airflow (by convection). If you cover the hole with anything, then you won't get proper airflow. You could mount a normal range hood to help, just above the unit.

I also cook with mine at the end of the gargage. Just open the door. I put a fan to blow the smoke out. Works for me.
But Smokin.... I do just that!!

I have the smokette in the garage, near the window. I attached a flexible aluminum dryer vent hose to the window frame. when I smoke, I slide the smokette (on a cart) next to the window, and flex the hose to hang just above the vent hole (about an inch). Then put the top of the vent out the top of the window. a good draft pulls smoke up the hose and out the window. well, most of the smoke. it's a pretty good, cheap solution.
Thanks for the responses and the suggestions! Since I am a retired OU professor, I contacted some of my engineering buddies and we have settled on a dryer system hose (thanks for idea!!)attached to a gas hot water vent stack attachment (hence 21/2" space)and with a small (3") projector fan at the other end of the hose. We drilled the hole (solid wall garage)today, put on the outside vent cap today and will attach hose to vent stack attachment on Tuesday and "check it out"--our Rube Goldberg solution. 'will let you know results. Many thanks for suggestions and information!
I am happy to report that I am cookin in the garage now with no unwanted smoke. Thanks for your suggestions. We had "over engineered" our plan and found that we did not need the 3" exhaust fan. I am now a devoted reader of this forum and I have learned a great deal.

Now I have two more problems: Learning how to use my smokette (I am deep into the 101s now)and what to do about the neighbors smelling the aromas and who are showing up plate in hand!
