HERE I AM AGAIN. I NOW HAVE SOME WALNUT WOOD I CAME ACROSS AND AM WONDERING IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS USED IT FOR SMOKING AND IF IT AS VERY GOOD. I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND ANYONE AROUND HERE WHO HAS USED IT.
I wouldn't smoke anything with that stuff, unless it would be a nest of bees. IMHO the only redeeming factors of a walnut tree are those delicious nuts, a gorgeous stain and they make for a "mean" gun cabinet. For goodness sake, don't plant a garden near one of them. The roots put off a toxin that is lethal to tomato and potato plants and it doesn't do anything good for the other plants.
Years ago I got a pickup load of black branches and overpowered a bunch of stuff, before I ceased using it.
From the FAQ
WALNUT - ENGLISH and BLACK - Very heavy smoke flavor, usually mixed with lighter woods like almond, pear or apple. Can be bitter if used alone. Good with red meats and game.
I would agree with everyone else on this board. I have 14 acres of black walnut trees, so I cut a few branches several years ago and tried it out. That was some of the worst food I have cooked...
