What is it for?

I picked up a new New Cookshack Model 50 with cover, jerky rods & Rib hooks off ebay for $574 and no shipping as it was close enough to pick up.
It came with the instruction book for the smokette. There is a piece of black metal about 1" x 12" with an angled 2" handle (for the lack of a better term) can anyone tell me what this is for?
I cranked out some good brisket with it this weekend and am just wondering what this is.

The black metal piece is used to pull out and push in the the wood box when hot.
