I'm smoking my first turkey for Thanksgiving this year (just put it in the Smokette), and it just occured to me that I have no idea how to serve it...

Traditional gravy doesn't sound right for smoked turkey, but neither does bbq sauce sound right for Thanksgiving. Any suggestions on a side sauce and side dishes that make sense would be greatly appreciated!

PJ, I did my first (and only so far) smoked turkey breast with the usual go-withs: mashed potatoes and veggies. Gravy is a must in my family , but once they tasted the smoked turkey, gravy only went on the potatoes and the turkey was eaten without any sauces, just a little salt and pepper. I like it best the next day cold in a sandwich! Smoked turkey is such a treat, I don't like to hide the flavor with a lot of sauces or gravy.

Happy Thanksgiving to you.

I love smoked turkey with cranberry sauce. Try some on your sandwich next day. Ditch the gravy, bring on the cole slaw. Next day use warm smoked turkey and cheese on sandwich, add cold cole slaw on top.

I usually smoke breasts for sandwich meat because of the issue you raised. Smoked turkey is better than non-smoked in some uses, but it is not traditional barbecue, and you certainly wouldn't sauce it. That is why I seldom do smoked pork tenderloin-the meat is so darned tasty I don't know what to serve with it, I just start eating it.
