When I decided to pick up some extra money by working part-time at a hospital across the state line in Missouri, I never realized it would pay off so well.
As soon as I arrived last weekend to work, the Ambulance Director told me to take unit 6 over to the neighbooring town of Caruthersville, Mo.
I asked him what was the nature of the call and he replied, " Your'e not picking anyone up, I need you to park the ambulance at the annual Sizzle on the River BBQ contest and standby in case someone has a heat related injury.
Well, to make a long story short, there were 27 teams entered, many are well known, ..Carbondale, IL......Murfysborough, IL....Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia..and so on.
got to see some trophys from MIM.(awesome looking). You know I got to try some awesome que!!!!!!
and I also met someone from the Apple City BBQ team from Illinois...Marten ??? (I can't pronounce the last name).
He was judging the competition. I enjoyed watching the judges come into the competitors cooking and tasting area. very interesting to see how they treated the judges like royalty..
If you ever get the chance to attend a sanctioned event like this you will not regret it. Get out there and ask questions, you may find a judge can give you just as much usefull info that a veteran cook can.....many times they are one in the same. The only bad thing is , I will have to wait another year before I get to do this again.
