I usually haul my FEC-100 in an open trailer with it standing up (my trailer has 30" sides). With gas being so expensive, I decided to try an experiment. I hauled it down to a family gathering standing up (250 miles), and brought it back (via the same route) laying down. I kept track of my mileage and discovered the following: It doesn't make a lot of difference.
My Yukon XL got 13.3 mpg with it standing up, and 14.6 mpg with it laying down on the return trip. Wind was not a factor in either direction. My family lives at an elevation that is about 1000' higher than my home, so I would normally expect to get a little better mileage on the return trip because of that alone.
So for me it boils down this way: For a 500 mile trip, at $3.50 a gallon, at most I can save $12 by laying my FEC-100 down in the trailer. That thing is heavy, so I won't be doing that anymore.
Anyways, just thought there might be some fellow geeks out there with open trailers that wondered the same thing.
