I have an sm260 and all of a sudden my hickory pieces are catching on fie not long after I start smoking. Never had the problem before. I tried two different boxes of wood and had the same problem.

Maybe try gently bending your heating ellement down slightly away from the wood box
Could be the wood was really, really dry and you're placing it closer to the elements. Maybe place it away from them, in the middle.
It also needs oxygen, so when you open to check, it will sometimes ignite. You can't really tell when the door is shut.
