Find a contest team and go along with them to see what it's all about.

Definitely get qualified as a judge and judge a contest.

There are a lot of lessons learned and maybe sometime I'll write about what I've learned as this is my first year on the circuit.

There's some good ideas here, I'm sure a few will be posted.

More later.

Smokin'
david,
just enter a contest near you.
download the sanctioning bodies rules and go have fun.
cook what you know, the way you know and let the chips fall where they may.
but the cool part is the people that you will meet. that's how we met tom and his wife and dave out of clearwater and it will just restore your faith in humanity to see that there really are great people out there and if you want to find them all you have to do is go to a contest and enter and just try. one other piece of advice is just tell the rep that you are new at this and you just can't believe the help that you will recieve
jack
david.

ask away. The best way is if you can get a team to mentor you, but ask all the questions you need and I'll be happy to help (as I'm sure others will).

No dumb or silly questions. I think I've learned a ton at each contest. Done my first 7 this year and have enough notes to confuse even me.
