Hi all,

I was judging a KCBS event this past weekend and had heard that the Board of Directors of KCBS had considered banning any electric, pellet and thermostatically controlled oven in competitions. They ended up not voting for any of this, but is this a real issue to the sanctioning boards? I hadn't heard of it.

Seems like if they don't apply rules as to the proper method of cooking Q, then why would it matter what type oven it is cooked in.

Just wondering what any of you had thoughts of and/or knew of this discussion.

Well Rick, my memory failed me once again. Instead of what I read being on the KCBS website, it was actually in the March 2007 KCBS Bullsheet. It was in an article about the minutes from the December 2006 BOD meeting.

What was written in the article was:

"Carolyn Wells polled the board regarding an inquiry from a member regarding the proposed auto relight feature on the new CookShack FEC controllers. It was decided that no action was required on this matter as this feature was not available at this time."

I think this is the comment that is maybe being taken out of context.

Hope this helps.

Rick,

Out of curiousity, where were you judging in February? KCBS has no sanctioned events then.

For the record, I am on the board and we did not vote to ban pellet cookers. At the annual rules meeting held in Lenexa, KS in November, the group that attended proposed and voted to send a recommendation to the KCBS board of directors that pellet cookers (summarized) be banned from competition. Only the items and issues that receive enough votes in this meeting and others move on to be considered by the board. This issue received enough votes, but the board decided no rule change was necessary.

Rick,

It was all lumped together - augers, eletronics, thermostatically controlled . . . .Currently the heat source must be a wood or charcoal and pellet cookers meet that definition. Delivery systems are not addressed. This is just my opinion, but I don't see KCBS taking a step backwards any time soon.
