I've signed up for a KCBS judging class in early Feb., at Cartersville, GA.

What's involved in the class? Do they let you taste, good, better, and best BBQ? I'm pretty excited to go and would like to get an idea as to what is involved.

I know Smokin' Okie will give me some good ideas, he suggested I do this when we met at "The Jack". I'd like to hear from others also.

Thanks,
C'Nooga

You'll have plenty of lecture and discussion.

You'll get to sample some product and practice judging it.

You'll then discuss what you did.

The cooks are cooking to a KCBS standard, and you are learning what the standard is.

Seems like it takes about four hrs.

If there is a contest the next day,ask immediately to be a judge.

You could even get hold of the person handling judges and ask to be on the panel, now.
C'Nooga,

Pretty much the way Tom said. The class I took was given by the contest rep for the competition that weekend. We were given a booklet covering the main points, lots of lecture/discussion and then practice with real food. The food had been cooked a week or so before and frozen so it was not as fresh as you will taste at a contest and the instructor tried to make some of the meat taste not as good so we had a variety. Also were shown different presentation boxes and what is and isn't allowed. It took about 4 hours including time for questions. You will have a good time and learn a lot. Do try to judge a contest as soon as possible just because it all makes more sense and gets easier with practice.
