8 lb picnic. It's what I had. Would rather a butt. Cut the skin off. Rubbed/coated completely and thick. I like these better as a roast, maybe smoked a lil, then in the crockpot with veggies and etc. Not enough fat to render for really quality pulled pork. Photos to follow

very nice! can't wait to see the final product! i'm a picnic fan myself... true, not as much fat, but the meat has a better flavor IMO. plus the ones I buy always come with the skin so I get to have some cracklins as a snack while waiting for the shoulder to smoke!
Put it in the smoker at midnight set on 250 (max). At noon today, meat was 182. Been using this Smokette since the 90's. Makes the best Q. A picnic is ok but paying for the weight of that big bone and the skin. I throw the skin out. I'm fat enough !
I've never done a picnic or a fresh ham except in the oven. I wonder if it will be pullable. If so I might try one since my markets routinely carry picnics this time of year up until the holidays. Agree with jobiewan the flavor is very good with any cut on a large bone. Please report back!
my picnics always shred just fine. the texture is definitely a bit different from a boston butt. the meat is a bit denser, so it pulls into longer strings. i just go at it for a while with my bear claws and it's ready to slap on some bread.
typically just my wife and i so we refrigerate half and freeze half. the frozen stuff always tastes just as good a few months later...
Thanks! I'll be looking for one, hopefully not a huge one. Just the two of us also.
