OK, I know this is a weird question, but I was wondering if anyone has had any trouble with rodents, bugs, birds, etc, getting into a parked smoker after it's set for a while. I have not. I have a cover on my FEC, but the smoke stack is usually open, as it sets under a porch. Of course, we don't have a lot of trouble pests anyway in our cedar home. But even insects, like flies and wasps do not get in the smoker. My theory is that they just don't like the smell of smoke.

The reason I'm asking, is one of my retirement projects is to build an old fashioned smokehouse with an underground smoke duct going to a downhill firebox. I'll use this mainly in the winter for cold smoking hams and full slabs of bacon and such, but was wondering if pest would be a problem.

As a matter of fact a couple of weeks ago I opened my smoker to do some chicken wings and a rat came flying out of the smoke vent. The inside had shredded aluminum foil and rat pellets on everything. Needless to say I wasn't happy that I had to do a thorough cleaning before I could use it. There was a tall flower pot under the vent and I'm sure the rat used it to get in. I have since put a coffee can over the opening and set some rat traps. Grrrrrrrr!!
