I like to double or triple smoke them for best smoke flavor. Also I prefer to split them before smoking (I grind mine once dry - if making adobe leave whole). Place on preferated tray and put in cold oven with thin pieces of hickory or pecan etc. Set to 225 or so(I have older style 020 that doesn't have temp mod like new ovens) and let smoke until oven reaches 200 or so. Turn off and let sit with door closed for an hour. Open door to vent heat. Once oven cools, replace wood and do again. Try not to over heat/cook peppers doing this. On last cycle I set temp to 170* or so and leave alone until peppers dry completely. Grind and store. Smokey and hot. You can take out some of the seeds before starting if you want less heat.
