Yesterday I cooked a 8.5lb butt. I started the cook at 8:30am. I set the temp at 248 degrees and added 5hrs cook time. I knew that 5hrs was not going to be enough time it is just a time I like to use to keep me involved in the cook. I checked after 2hrs.I basted and injected at that time. All was going well.I forgot to mention that the temp outside at the start of the cook was a brisk canadian -21degrees. I looked at my controller and the digital read outs had disappeared..but the cooked was doing just fine and after 3hrs the butt was up to 160 degrees. After 5hrs the FEC100 went into its hold mode. I then discovered that My IQ4 key pad had frozen up. The only pad that responded was my reset button. I checked the Butt temp at this time and it was up to 180degrees.My only idea was to either move the butt indoors to my oven or try to thaw out the pads. I opted to try to thaw it out. I gently pour about 1/2 a litre of hot tap water on the key pad..the digital readout was first to come back. Then the rest. I reset the cook for another 5hrs just to be sure. It took a total cook time of 9hrs to get the butt up to 205degrees. I am not sure if the BBQ maintained the temp thatI had set or was it struggling with the cold as well. I did bump it up to 260degrees after 7hrs because the butt wuld go up past 180degrees. When the cook was over I could not even turn it off. Everything had froze up..so I pulled the plug and rolled her in the garage. The temp after the cook was -24degrees.Anyway she seems to be just fine and it has warmed up to minus 18degrees so I am going to fire her up for a minute or two just to be sure all is fine. Anyone else have any chilling stories to tell.Rob
