Actual, the correct answer it is depends.

Some models have the deflector, most do not.

My non-ramp, straight auger doesn't have the deflector and I actually crisp chicken up directly over the flame by removing the heat shield.

So depends on your model, but for the "non deflector" models, the heat shield is the drip pan.
