Yep, like an artist combines colors, you can combine woods for various effects. You can even get to the point of adding herbs with your wood, garlic, etc.

I haven't checked the files here, but I wouldn't be surprised to see several discussions on the nuances of different wood combinations.

A personal favorite of mine is apple and then a touch of hickory...though cherry is good, so is the Jack Daniel wood for certain beef smokes, and so are the wine-barrel staves.
