I recieved my series 50 this past week and had a question about one of the pieces shipped with it.
There is a piece of metal, looks like flat stock, bent in a L shape, one length is about an inch or so, the other length is about 6 or so inches long, it doesn't show up on the parts list in the book and the only place it looks like it goes is under the wood box.
Any ideas?

Thanks
Bud

I think that is to pull the wood box out with while it is hot. I just got my 50 a few days ago the the salesman told me what that piece is used for.
Are you having any problems with Temp swings? I turned my unit on this morning & set to 180. It went to 304. Reset to 225 and it dropped well below 200 then after awhile went to 290. They sent me a new thermostat & I installed it but still have problems. The 1st time I turned in on before installing the new control, it went to above 300 & could not control the temp except to unplug. So far I am not too pleased. Been using a WSM with the Digiq controllr & had much better control of the temperature. Thinking about taking this thing back.
Sorry AirForce1, must of been replying same time you were on the tool part.
So far I have used mine only a few times, seasoned it the first time with no temp. probe in the box, all the other times, I did put a probe in the box but did not notice too much of a swing in temp, I plan on doing either summer sausage or smoke some Italian sausage this weekend (if not called out to work), will let you know how it turns out.

Supposed to have temp swings. The thermostat kicks the heating element on when needed and the temp goes up. The element kicks back off and the temp goes back down. Just like the oven in your kitchen. If you want to make sure it is cooking at the max average temp you are supposed to be (250*F). Leave the probe in an empty smoker dangling from the smoke hole high above the empty woodbox. Record the temp every 15 minutes after an ititial 30-60 minute warm up time. Average the temps and see what you get. I doubt you have an actual problem, except that you expect the cook temp to be constant.

AirForce1, I'm actualy doing ribs this morning and sausage this afternoon, right now I have the ribs in and my temp. probe about 1/2 way down in the box itself, my temp. swings are from the highest @155 deg to the lowest @207 deg. Try what GLH says. Hope this helps!
The only problem I have, is the thermostat doesn't shut off when it is in the off position, pluged it in this morning and while I was getting the ribs ready, I noticed the smoker heating up, thats fine with me, I only plug in either of my smokers only when I'm ready for them.

I have had my 055 for about a year. I put a deep-fry temp probe in the vent hole to check the smoker temp, and a digital remote probe in the food. I set the digital on the temp I want it to go off at and wait until it is done. I learned to leave the door shut and it is "done when it is done".

I don't worry about the internal temp swings because the food being cooked doesn't reflect the swing temp. The food temp will steadily increase until it hits the plateau. After the plateau (Boston Butt mostly) it will start to climb again.

Good luck with your smoker and many fine meals to come.
