I noticed on the website, they're all blended with Alder. Would be interested to know if they create more ash.

I just read about a guy in Laramie WY his elevation is 7200ft in was having problems with some ash from pellets from prairie wood I think it was.
I have just started to do ASh research and one problem is : ) I only have a 100lbs wood pellets and no pellet grill yet : )

If a person doesn't neglect keeping his Burn Pot clean. Wouldn't this take care of a small ash problem if any problem?

It's not that the pot is clean, but that the pellets themselves produce more ash and thus fill up the pot quicker.

Traeger "Alder" based pellets are awful and just about anyone that used them agrees. They have an Oak base that's a little better.

My advice? I'm just not a fan of alder at all, certainly not as a base for pellets

Pellet brands I've used include Bear Mountain, Lumberjack, BBQer's Delight, and Cookshack. Hands down, I think Cookshacks's are the best for low ash and good BTU/heat produced. I have had issues getting my FEC100 up to a higher heat when adjusting temps during a cook with some pellets, but no trouble doing that with Cookshack's. (No, it was not a control board issue.) So I just bought a 1/2 ton of Cookshack's pellets and I'll be happy now for a while. The price of Cookshack's pellets even with the shipping charges, are still a good deal and worth it due to their better performance!!

Thank you for the replies guys. I have to say I'm not very picky. That can be good or bad I guess. I have 40 lbs of something that coming with the PG500. I guess that will be Cookshack pellets.

I did pick up a bag of Traeger from my neighborhood hardware store. I had a 5 dollar coupon that I used.
So it looks like I will have 3 brands of pellets to try out : )

Traeger goes for 12.00 a 20 lb bag here from one guy. Most of the other places sell Traeger for about 15 dollars.

Pay attention to the performance of the different pellets and judge for yourself. I can't speak yet as to how the different brands perform in a PG500 as mine won't arrive until this Thursday, but I did notice a difference in my FEC100.
You just bought the best smoker/grille made (i.e. Cookshack), so consider that when buying pellets. When I first started my pellet smoking adventures, I too was looking for the "best price" on pellets as I was going thru them pretty fast (may have been caused by the amount I was using the smoker ), but I have since learned a better performing pellet makes life just a little better.
That "pellet dump" feature of the PG500 will help you judge the difference between brands without cross-mixing them. Just keep the pellets dry and enjoy your new toy!!

Fast Eddy sells his 100% Hickory for $1 @ lb incl S&H. CS charges the same if you buy 350 lbs. Those were last year's prices.

Sometimes I just don't think. For some reason I had forgotten that Cookshack sells wood pellets.

I kinda feel like it was rude of me to post prices from a competitor.

does anyone know who makes cook shack or FE pellets. I'm pretty sure they don't have a pellet machine and do it themselves. If I remember right, my FEC 100 came with two bags of FE hickory.
