Hi,

Just wanted to start a thread and figure out a long term solution to photo posting.

The issue has always been that if we don't host them on the CS server, those public sites tend to change over the year.

What I'm looking for, and thought I'd throw it out there, is there a site or location, even if it's paying for hosting, that we could use if CS owned it? Looking for a cool, easy option that maybe everyone could use easily enough.

I'm pretty tech savy, and know a lot of you are too. If you know of someplace we could make our own, then maybe that's an option.

The only other choice is to put them out there in a public site, like Photobucket, but we don't know how long that will be there.

Another option also is SmugMug.

Key is do we keep it simple, for loading photos or make it more with individual albums. We could go several directions.

So, tell me your thoughts, and let's come up with a plan.

For now, so as not to miss photos, I'm creating a Cookshack forum Photo Album in PhotoBucket until/unless I see a better option. I'm using that because I can upload via FTP.

Personally I want to see more photos especially of the boxes in the Rub/Sauce exchange.

Smokin,
I like the CS photobucket idea. The only challenge I see is members would need the sign in password. Not sure if your forum format allows permissions for single posts but if it does you could post a sticky topic that only members could open. Maybe even make it were you need x amount of posts to view the topic with the password.

Another option would be members would need to pm you for password so you could make sure no innapropriate pictures are posted. The only down side to this would be members would have to wait for you to be on.

I know other forums have an image host built in by their server host but I'm sure that is an upgrade.
But we'd only need the password once, correct? If so, that's not bad.

It's a great idea to find a simple way for all of us to post pictures. It would certainly increase the picture posts as you say Smokin and add to this forum. I went to ImageShack cause as with the exchange package, I usually move quickly (except for fixing that squeaky door for Mrs Pags). When I transfer my last picture from the camera to the computer, I'm ready to post. My fear is broken links. It really is a shame to lose pictures along the way.
How does sa CS Photobucket album improve over an individual maintaining his own Photobucket acount?

Photos disappear from posts only if they are removed from or moved into a different Photobucket album by the person. This latter way is the most common as folks like to reorganize their photo collections without realizing that by simply moving a photo from one album to another will make it disappear from any posting on this or any other forum.

All of my PB albums are private but my photos remain in posts as I do not move them around.

The key to a centralize album is album/photo size and some of the throughput issues. the free album has a throughput monthly limit.

Agree with the PW, that would be something I would provide via IM. I'd have to. No way to publish it, but then once you have it, you would have it for future uploads. That's one of my concerns.

You can use your personal account, the issue is that if you ever change it, then the photos disappear. That has happened quite a bit. Something that will happen when you've been here for 12+ years.

The Pro account is only $25/year. I'd be more than willing to chip into a forum 'pro account' if it would enable us to all use it in the terms set out above with Smokin or maybe a couple people having the ability to provide the password information. Like Tim-In-AZ suggested, anyone other than Smokin would only release the PW to someone who was a regular and had X number of forum posts. Jer
I'm looking at options, and while I appreciate the offer of $$$ help, I expect CS will pick up the costs.

There are several features to this idea. One is people can do more than just post a photo or two, you can create albums under your name.

Looking at the various ones out there so keep the ideas coming.

The KISS approach is always big with me.
I've been using Photobucket for many years and don't really see them folding up shop anytime soon. Photobucket does have a Group Album option where one individual sets up a group album and individuals (who must have their own Photobucket account) may then contribute to the group album. It may be worth looking into.

Are there any upgrade options for the forum software that would provide enhanced photo hosting options?

Hey Russ,

If you would like to check out the advantages/disadvantages/feel of a PhotoBucket Pro account to see if it would fit send me an email and I'll let you check out my account. I only have it to post photo's on Forums anyway so nothing there that would be compromised by you looking/testing (Except a couple EGGHead cooks.) Jer

Thanks Jer, I saw your message too late. I may enlist your help, if you want, in working with me and helping others use the account if we go that way. Share the expertise so to speak.

I actually went ahead and signed up for a "cookshackforum" account. I can afford one year for testing. It's either that or SmugMug. SM is more costly, but I love the album idea for members (added benefit of being in the forum I guess)

TN Q I saw that the other members must have their own PB account to access and post in the Group account. What I could not find out is if the member has only a free PB account are they limited to the small daily bandwidth for uploading/sharing photos and video's? My guess is yes which has the potential to be very limiting.

Just my observation from looking into the two sites. Jer
